I love onions but hate having my eyes sting! Any advice on how to chop an onion without getting teary eyed?

Are there any secret methods or techniques I should know about?I love onions but hate having my eyes sting! Any advice on how to chop an onion without getting teary eyed?
If you put onions in the refridgerator...for like a couple hours and then you chop em', you should be fine, or run the onion under cold water.....I love onions but hate having my eyes sting! Any advice on how to chop an onion without getting teary eyed?
Peel your onion under running water. Invest in a chopper and let it do the work.
same problem just wet the knife before you cut the onion or chew gum or wear goggles i always just wet the knife but chewing gum workds too
put in the freezer just for a little bit, cut it under cold water. also lighting a candle helps, don't ask me how, I do that a lot at my restaurant. Choppers are nice to. Some stores sell pre chopped onions.
put the onion in the freezerfirst for a while before cutting it, this freezes the gases that escape when cutting and sting your eyes
A chef recommends that you cut your onion into two and then soak in water for 5 minutes, then peel.
It sounds ridiculous, but my mom always told me (and her mom told her) to chop onion near the kitchen sink and while chopping leave the cold water running from the faucet. I can't tell you why, but it's always worked for me.
My grandmother used to strike a match, blow it out and bite on the wood part with the sulfur part sticking out of her mouth. I never once saw her shed a tear, worked great for her!
somebody told me to cut the unions in a bowl that's full of water.... i mean cutting the unions under the water.
Light a candle or match near where you are cutting. It works I swear!!!
Start opposite the end where the roots come out and dip the think in ice water before cutting.

Ive heard that holding an unlit match in your mouth (business side out) while chopping them will help too.
Maybe try closing your eyes but chop carefully!!!!!!!!!
Go with Melanie S. or prepare the onions under running tap water. I use yellow onions exclusively ... they seem not to be too guilty of making a person tear up. White onions are the real guilty culprits and nothing I've tried will work ... working with white onions and I wind up every time, regardless of what I try to do to prevent it, with runny, tearing, stinging eyes. Red onions are not too bad. But, I wouldn't touch a white onion with your knife.
Use the freshest you can find.
soak them or get a chopper
I have to agree with you. I love onions. I have tried all sorts of little tips that people suggest and none of them have really worked for me. I find that the easiest way to chop onions is to use my food processor. I simply just peel the outer layer of the onion and cube my onion into four pieces. Then I drop them in the processor and pulse until I get the desired choppiness of the onion. Okay, I so know that choppiness isn't a word, but I could not find another way to explain it. I hope this will help you! Good luck and Have a Blessed day! :)
Well I used to be a prep cook and had to peel and chop a gallon of onions every morning and the cook told me to put a piece of bread in my mouth and it work for me hope this helps
chop them in a foodprocessor
People will tell you a million different tricks. The truth is, none of them really work. However, it will cut it down if you soak them in water for a while before you slice them.
When chopping, have a spoon in your mouth or try wearing safety gogles or glasses or store onions in the fridge so they are could when you cut them and less volitile.
One silly way I have learned is to stick your face in the freezer for 30 seconds before you chop! Repeat every minute or two. But a more practical approach is to turn on a fan, open a window, or wear some protective glasses. Cooling the onion helps mildly, but remember the colder it gets, the harder it is to chop. As a cook myself, I have found that through prolonged exposure, I become immune to the onion's sting, but then when I stop cooking for a period of time and come back to it, there we go again!
Here's the secret method, Sit down drink a few beer's and have somebody else chop the onions for you.
My Favorite is the full containment suit.. you know the kind they wear when going into a hazardous waste dump... works like a charm and only costs about $15 grand. happy chopping.... alternative, put on a really sad movie and then you won't know the difference.

either that or just suck it up pumpkin ;%26gt;)
cut the bottom off first hold an unlit kitchen match between your teethwhile chopping the sulphur in the tip will dissapate

the fumes
breathe through ur mouth, pull ur hair back if u have long hair, and i have heard a burning candle helps draw the smell away.
Try putting in contacts if you have them!
As a professional chef im telling you this right now.

The freezer, the gum chewing, the candle and the fan does not work. Here is the SURE FIRE way professionals chop onions w/o the help of a machine and w/o tears.

1. Find the hard nob at the end of your onion. On a cutting board cut this straight in half then IMMEDIATELY place the cut side down on the cutting board. By doing this you will stop the onion's pores from coming into contact with your eyes.

2. Cut very fast. you can find any online guide for fast mincing.

3. Also think about the onion you're using. At the restaurant we use vidalia onions AKA sweet onions. They cause much less stress to your eyeballs and they lend a good flavor and can be substituted for just about any other onion.
I light a candle near where I'm chopping the onion. My mom told me to do this and I don't get teary eyed. Not sure if it works for everyone though.
I was curious about this, so I went to onions-usa.com, the site of the National Onion Association (I kid you not) and they say...

How can I reduce tearing when cutting an onion?

Reduce tearing when cutting onions by first chilling the onions for 30 minutes. Cut off the top and peel the outer layers leaving the root end intact. (The root end has the largest concentration of sulphuric compounds that make your eyes tear.)
Keep your mouth shut.

I've been cooking for a long, long time and this really works!

In life, as well as in the kitchen.
get a mincer for $20! and let it do its job! i have the same problem but not anymore!
