What are your thoughts about this advice?

Two years ago when i graduated high school i was in USMC JROTC and my Senior Marine instructor told me that ..

The military is not for everyone, College is not for everyone, but everyone is expected to work.

what is your take on what he said? what are your thoughts about it? is this advice he told me true? What are your thoughts about this advice?
I think he was being honest with you. The military is not the same as it once was and it is not for everyone. In this day and age of information technology getting a general discharge is not a good thing and is easy for employers to find out about. Not only that but the service used to try and find a place for you to fit in but doing less with more, the high ops tempo, along with the difference in generations that we now have it is not the place to be if you don't like it or can't stay out of trouble.

At the same time you will probably have to work unless you come from a family with money, win the lottery, or marry money. You know your economic situation better than me but if you don't come from a family with money what are the odds of marrying it or winning the lottery. As for college there are many jobs that don't require college but do require involment in going to school and getting into some kind of a skilled trade that you can make a halfway decent living in. Some people go to college for the wrong reasons or don't finish it and end up owing a lot in loans and grants these days. They then drop out and do something else but the bill for their schooling still remains to be paid. Some of that can be avoided is what he is also saying to you and that you need to consider your choices carefully and try to make the best one for you especially since it is you that will have to ultimately live with the outcome from it.What are your thoughts about this advice?
It seems like a very bright and non judgmental piece of advice. And, he's right. It sounds like he believes you are squared away and know yourself well and are capable of making the right individual decision for you.

Good advice. Sounds like a good guy.
Of course its true, a simple and sad fact of life... So do one or the other or both and hope for a career you love... Good luck... :)
YES ,

smart person who does not seem to pressure people into the military.
Keep your mind open.
Yea, that's true.
Hard to know exactly what he meant without really understanding the context when he said it. But yes, every nations success and economy depends on productivity. And productivity is derived from people working and pulling their own weight. We work to produce the goods and services other people make and offer. We can buy them because we earn money producing goods and services. A win - win situation. It's what keeps an economy afloat. People who don't work and strive to improve their lives are just an anchor. How we choose to earn a living is as vast and as full of opportunity as we want it to be.
